Last month, Microsoft started allowing users of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 to upgrade to Windows 10 free of charge. The question we have been getting a lot lately is “should I upgrade to Windows 10?” Our answer to that is (and always will be) “does it make sense for your business?” Microsoft’s free upgrade to Windows 10 will be available until July 29, 2016. From the perspective of not having to spend any money on another Windows upgrade, it makes business sense. Since there are essentially 7 months before you need to decide, we suggest putting together a plan.
This plan would include:
- Test your applications on Windows 10
Determine what does not work with Windows 10 and contact your software vendor to see if an update is on the horizon that will.
- Make sure your hardware can handle the upgrade
While the system requirements are effectively the same as Windows 7, this may be the time to replace some aging hardware.
- Make sure your employees are ready for the change
Some simple training videos will go a long way in getting your staff comfortable with the new look and feel.
- Don’t adopt too early or wait until the last minute
Wait until most of the bugs are worked out. We feel that that early second quarter of 2016 is a good time to start rolling out upgrades. It gives you an early enough start to complete the project and it’s late enough in the year to complete all of your testing/training.
